The G Spot: A Garmin 1350lmt Review |
|---|
People generally don't appreciate "help" from backseat drivers, yet most motorists do appreciate electronic assistance from an eye in the sky. Knowing this, a noted manufacturer has come up with GPS unit in the form of the Garmin 1350lmt. Basically, this doohickey is the manufacturer's GPS made sleeker and slimmer. Its display consists of a TFT color touch screen that measures 4.3 inches. It also comes with backlighting and operates at a resolution of 480 x 272 WQVGA pixels. The unit is preloaded with City Navigator NT data for 48 US States (including Hawaii and Puerto Rico). Users will be pleased to know that the Garmin 1350lmt offers free lifetime traffic information and map updates four times a year. Besides having several million points of interest already installed (which are also updatable), the unit provides user-friendly navigation features in the form of lane assistance, ecoRoutes for fuel efficiency and even voice-prompted directions on a turn-by-turn basis. Its four-hour average battery life ensures continued guidance on long road trips. People who are fond of tinkering with little extras here and there may browse through the picture viewer of the Garmin 1350lmt, play around with numbers on its calculator and measurement/currency converters or simply check the international time on the unit's world travel clock. The unit also possesses other advantages not directly stated in its product description. For instance, the gadget's onscreen help options will save many non-tech savvy users from needless headaches. Street names spoken by digitized voices on the Garmin 1350lmt help keep drivers' eyes focused on the road in front of them. Calculations are made faster than you can shake a stick at it. Goodies such as a convenient QWERTY virtual keyboard and speed limit displays and round out its list of helpful features. New technology isn't perfect, however, and this unit is no exception. There are things that the Garmin 1350lmt simply cannot do, such as searching maps by zip code. The long update time (around one to two hours) may turn some users off and traffic data may not be 100% reliable. There are fewer highway routes than one might expect from a gadget of this caliber; alas, no truck mode exists for it, either. Hair splitters may fume over the lack of an AC charger or 3.5 mm headphone jack in the package. Anyone with even halfway decent hearing will notice that the sound quality on the unit's smaller speakers doesn't quite hold up to the bigger speakers of other GPS units by the same manufacturer. Furthermore, the unit's touch screen sensitivity may also be a bit off—try using a ballpoint pen if the screen won't respond to finger presses. |
